Kettle [realia]. 1790 circa

Large copper kettle has a rounded base, flared sides, a rolled rim and a thick wire bail-type handle. The handle fits into two black metal eyelet braces that are fastened to the sides of the kettle. Engraved text on one side of the kettle reads: "SOMETIME DURING THE LAST YEARS OF THE 18TH CENTURY / THIS KETTLE / HAVING BEEN IN THE POSSESSION OF THE / BRITISH SOLDIERY / WAS LEFT BY THEM WHEN REPULSED IN AN ATTEMPTED ASSAULT ON / FORT WAYNE / COLONEL JOHN JOHNSTON THEN IN COMMAND OF THE FORT BROUGHT THE KETTLE TO PIQUA WHERE FOR FORTY YEARS / HE WAS INDIAN AGENT FOR THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT. / AND BY HIM BEQUEATHED TO HIS DAUGHTER / JULIANA JOHNSTON PATTERSON / THROUGH WHOM IT NOW REMAINS THE PROPERTY OF / LUCY DUN PATTERSON / JUNE 1917 / BEQUEATHED TO / ROBERT DUN PATTERSON / CAROLINE PATTERSON SHAW."

Johnston, John, 1775-1861

Johnston was born in Ireland. He emigrated to the United States and settled in Philadelphia in 1786. In 1802 he was appointed Indian factor in Fort Wayne, Ind. and apparently took over the position of Indian agent there in 1809. In 1811 he was transferred to Piqua, Ohio, where he was Indian agent for the next 20 years. From the description of Account book, 1802-1811. (Indiana Historical Society Library).
